The College places a great emphasis on the quality of the education it provides. Statistics show that students who live in college owned housing perform at a higher academic level, make the transition to being a college student quicker, are exposed to many more educational, cultural, and learning experiences than students who commute. In that spirit, Canisius requires that all freshman and sophomore students, who do not live with their parents at their primary address, live in college owned housing.
The only exceptions to this requirement are:
- Students who are married or have children.
- Adult students (over 21 years of age)
Requests for exemption from this requirement must be made to Kathleen Farley, Assistant Director of Residence Life. Applications are available in the Office of Residence Life, located in the lower-level of Dugan Hall, or by downloading the form here. Appeals of the decisions must be made in writing to the Director of Residence Life/Associate Dean of Students. Proper documentation (birth certificate, marriage licenses, etc.) must be submitted by March 1st for the following fall semester and by November 1st for the following spring semester.
During the Housing Selection process in the spring semester, exemption applications will be available for current freshmen students that are looking to either be exempt from the requirement or to change their status to commuter and move back to their primary address. All exemption applications must be submitted, with all required signatures, no later than March 1, 2010 in order to be considered for exemption.
Should you have any questions regarding the requirement, please feel free to contact the Office of Residence Life by emailing housing@canisius.edu or dialing x8300.
