Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is one of Canisius' most popular and rewarding experiences. Campus Ministry has offered this unique community service alternative to traditional spring break activities for the past 20 years. In the spring of 2009, 54 Canisius students and staff traveled to sites in rural Applachia located in Kentucky and West Virginia to work on home repair, to Erie, PA to live and work with the Benedictine Commnuity, and to Washington D.C. to attend a teach-in on immigration.

The ASB program is based on four cornerstones: Community, Social Justice, Reflection, and Simple Living. The experience offers a tangible opportunity to reach out and extend oneself beyond normal boundaries. It provides an opportunity to view a different culture and meet diverse people. Participants and community members gain a valuable perspective on human relationships and the power of service. Students return renewed, refreshed, and with a new vision about their lives and the world around them.
